At Besseggen Fjellpark, you wake up in the middle of a mountain adventure, with fantastic hiking experiences in every direction. Here, we’ve gathered an overview of some of our favorite mountain hikes and tips.

Galdhøpiggen – Norway’s highest mountain

The king of Norway’s mountain peaks – and a must in any hiking log. Despite being the highest mountain in Norway (2469 m.), Galdhøpiggen is easier to climb than many expect. There are several routes to the top, and even experienced children can join. The view from the summit is truly majestic.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 627 m
  • Difficulty: demanding

Besshøe – an airy summit near Besseggen

Ready for a bit of a thrill? The neighbor of the popular Besseggen ridge is the equally stunning Besshøe. Rising to 2258 m, it offers panoramic views of the Gjende Alps and the rest of Jotunheimen, surrounded by beautiful lakes. Here, you’ll also stand atop one of Norway’s highest cliffs- with a 1000-meter drop straight down to Russvatnet!

  • Distance: approx. 22.2 km
  • Elevation gain: approx. 1320 m
  • Difficulty: very demanding

Glittertind – one of Jotunheimen’s finest hikes

Not everything that glitters is gold, but some things are worth more than gold. Glittertind, Norway’s second-highest mountain (2465 m.), offers one of the most rewarding hikes in Jotunheimen. With a steady climb of 1000 vertical meters, you’ll feel it in your legs and lungs, but you’ll be rewarded all the way with incredible views.

  • Distance: approx. 19.0 km
  • Elevation gain: approx. 1,378 m
  • Difficulty: demanding

Knutshøe – Besseggen’s tough little brother

Many believe this is the Gjendine ridge described by Ibsen in Peer Gynt! When the weather is good, take the opportunity to hike Knutshøe (1517 m.). The trail is relatively tough and unmarked, so only attempt it in good conditions. In return, you’ll get one of the best views over Gjende and the surrounding peaks.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 556 m

Knutshøe i Jotunheimen

Heimdalshøe – a hidden gem

The Heimdalshøe massif (1843 m.), just east of Jotunheimen, is often overshadowed by more famous hikes, but it’s well worth the trip. The views along the way are even better than from the summit, so take your time, pause often, and enjoy the ascent.

  • Distance: approx. 10.3 km
  • Elevation gain: approx. 845 m
  • Difficulty: moderately demanding

Sikkilsdalshøe – in the realm of wild reindeer

Jotunheimen often means steep, demanding hikes, but the route to Sikkilsdalshøe (1778 m.) from Maurvangen is relatively easy, with a steeper section towards the end. At the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views in all directions, towards Jotunheimen in the west, Rondane in the east, and down into Sikkilsdalen. There’s also a good chance of spotting wild reindeer here.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 828 m

Rasletind – an easy summit with spectacular views

Between Bygdin and Gjendesheim rises Rasletind (2105 m.). The trail is well marked from Valdresflye, not particularly strenuous, and suitable for families with experienced children. From the summit, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of the Gjende Alps.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 833 m
  • Difficulty: demanding

Surtningssue – high mountain hike with spectacular views

Surtningssue (2368 m.) is often considered one of Jotunheimen’s best viewpoints. A marked trail runs from Memurubu all the way to the summit, making it one of the most accessible of Norway’s 2000-meter peaks.

  • Difficulty: demanding
  • Elevation: 1495 m

Gjendehøe – short and easy hike with great views

A short hike with a big reward! Gjendehøe (1257 m.) is ideal for families, as an afternoon walk, or for recovery after a tougher hike the day before. From the top, you’ll have a great view of Gjendesheim and Lake Gjende.

Facts:

  • Duration: approx. 2 hours from Gjendesheim, and just under 1 hour from Valdresflye
  • Difficulty: easy – suitable for everyone
  • Elevation: 1257 m

Bukkehåmåren, Kvassryggen og Høgdebrottet

Ready for a real challenge? This circular hike across Bukkehåmåren, Kvassryggen, and Høgdebrotet is a top-class route, varied, scenic, and demanding. In addition to two peaks above 2000 meters, you’ll experience the often-overlooked Bukkehåmåren, which offers one of the most spectacular views of Gjende, along with dramatic cliffs and excellent photo opportunities.

  • Duration: approx. 9 hours round trip
  • Distance: approx. 19.0 km
  • Elevation gain: approx. 1,318 m
  • Difficulty: very demanding
