Mountain safety

Jotunheimen offers fantastic experiences for those who are well prepared for the high mountains. Here you will find a simple packing list and mountain safety guidelines for your mountain hike.

Packing list

No two mountain hikes are alike, and conditions change throughout both the year and the day. This checklist covers the essentials to bring on your hike:

  • Mountain boots — preferably waterproof with good ankle support
  • Extra pairs of socks — preferably wool
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Blister plasters — ideally tape your heels before setting out
  • Sunglasses
  • Wool base layer — even in midsummer
  • Windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Mittens and a hat — in every month of the year
  • At least 1 liter of water
  • Packed lunch
  • Map and compass/GPS
  • A little something sweet to keep your spirits up
  • Camera
  • Bank card or cash
  • A mobile phone is no guarantee of signals in the mountains, but is still worth bringing.

The mountain code

In addition to the right equipment, it is worth keeping the Norwegian Mountain Code in mind when planning and carrying out a mountain hike.

  1. Plan your trip and inform others about the route you have selected.
  2. Adapt the planned routes according to ability and conditions.
  3. Pay attention to the weather and the avalanche warnings.
  4. Be prepared for bad weather and frost, even on short trips.
  5. Bring the necessary equipment so you can help yourself and others.
  6. Choose safe routes. Recognize avalanche terrain and unsafe ice.
  7. Use a map and a compass. Always know where you are.
  8. Don’t be ashamed to turn around.
  9. Conserve your energy and seek shelter if necessary.
